Even if you have a supportive, caring partner,
physician or midwife, will he or she:
Come to your home and
labor with you until it's time to go to the hospital or birthing
center and then stay by your side until the baby is born?
Help you formulate meaningful birth and newborn care plans based
on your preferences and desires?
Help you interpret
and understand any procedures and medical interventions during
labor and delivery, and help you get the information you need to
make an informed decision?
Suggest alternate
positions to make labor more productive and to ease discomfort?
Provide emotional
support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint?
Provide massage, "hip
squeeze" and other techniques to ease back labor?
Facilitate
communication between you, your partner, and your providers?
Bring birth balls,
massage aids, aromatherapy, and other "tools" to help you feel
more comfortable during labor and delivery?
Take pictures of your
new baby and provide you with a written account of the birth?
Be available for
several weeks after the birth to answer any questions you have?
If you answered "No" to any of
these questions, then you need and deserve a Doula!
